Abstract

The current UDDI standard does not support dynamic federation of registries in the Navy’s disconnected and low bandwidth environment. To support these dynamic, multi-enclave federations while keeping security policies in place, ATC-NY, in collaboration with Architecture Technology Corporation, will develop DaSD (Dynamic Service Discovery). We will employ a modified gossip protocol to enable UDDI registries to be dynamically distributed while using XML compression technology to meet low-bandwidth requirements. To determine feasibility in Phase I we will create a proxy server which clients will transparently use to connect to UDDI servers. The proxy server will keep track of added/removed/failed nodes as well as security policies to be enforced. The proxy server will also manage replication among UDDI nodes. We will also build a prototype simulator, which contains the same events of a dynamic UDDI federation in a low-bandwidth network, to run experiments and optimize the performance of DaSD. By combining the strength of UDDI 3’s features and DaSD’s capabilities, we should be able to support the Navy’s requirements for federating UDDI registries between afloat and ashore networks.
