Abstract

Technology continues to advance at faster and faster rates. Often new technology is created with little regard for the impact to the humans who must use this technology. One new technology the Navy is considering using is autostereographic displays, which permit users to see a true 3D image without wearing cumbersome glasses. Aptima and its partner, Dr. Dirk Reiners of University of Louisiana, Lafayette conducted a review of the HSI research in 3D displays to show where 3D technology improves total system performance without HSI impacts. After completing this analysis, we drafted research-based guidelines for the use and screen design of autostereographic displays. We also conducted a technology review of the autostereographic displays. In Phase II, Aptima will identify submarine rates that would benefit from 3D technology. We will work with Dr. Reiners to conduct research to expand the guidelines and the technology evaluation conducted in Phase I. This research and these guidelines will serve as the basis for a new tool: Guidelines and Rules Instrument for Displays in 3 Dimensions (GRID3D). The GRID 3D tool will allow systems acquisitions professionals to understand the appropriate 3D technology to utilize based on human performance expectations, cost, and other factors.
