Abstract

The Army’s Future Force will transform human warfighting units into distributed teams of human and robotic assets. These robotic assets are envisioned to dramatically improve real-time situational awareness (SA) for human troops, and increase mission success. Aptima has tested these claims for DARPA, ONR, and others in computational and human factors experiments. We have identified several challenges at the interfaces between the human and machine, and between human commanders and operators. Aptima and Lockheed Martin propose to address these challenges in a manner that leverages new science concerning human-robot and human-human collaboration. The product of this work will be the Command and Control Robotic Assets Display (C2RAD). To create C2RAD, the team will: conduct a Cognitive Work Analysis of human-robot missions in the Future Force; develop requirements for system models, and draft a system architecture; develop and demonstrate a C2RAD user interface; and plan a full evaluation of the prototyped product in Phase II.
