Abstract

In this project the aim is to make low cost wireless nods that can be fitted on UAVs to monitoring the condition and wear cycles of the vehicle, both in service and storage. The technology to be used builds on the well-established Analatom Inc. corrosion monitoring sensor and node. This system has been significantly improved upon in phase 1 to produce a node and sensor system that is tuned to UAV structural monitoring, i.e. light weight, low power and cost. In phase 2 we now want to make the complete system to work with the node and deliver high quality structural data for prognostics analysis. The proposed technology has a wide range of applications and sits well in the companies Structural Monitoring systems objectives. The team on the project has an excellent mix of sensor, electro-mechanical, embedded systems & systems engineering expertise. There are a wide range of technologies being merged in the proposed system; micro mechanics, electronics, electro-chemistry, low power wireless and data compression firmware coding. Although novel, there is nothing in the proposed system that represents a technological risk. Project objective and resources have been carefully weighted out to ensure that all goals are obtainable.
