Abstract

THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP SPECIFICATIONS FOR A PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM (PCS) TO PERMIT CAREGIVERS TO MONITOR THE WELL-BEING OF ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBERS. THE PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM WOULD INCORPORATE AN ACTIVE ALERT INITIATED BY THE OLDER PERSONS AND A PASSIVE ALERT TRIGGERED BY PHYSIOLOGICAL MONITORS INDICATING THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG. THE PHYSIOLOGICAL MONITORS WOULD BE SELECTED ACCORDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE PARTICULAR OLDER PERSON. THE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM COULD BE USED IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WITH INSUFFICIENT POPULATION DENSITY TO SUPPORT STAND PERSONAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEMS.
