Abstract:
Not Available This program proposes to investigate and demonstrate novel low cost approaches to 3D Carbon-Carbon (C/C) manufacture. These novel processes will result in composites with at least the required properties and exhibit a uniform density with size capability of at least 6 x 6 x 10 inches. They will allow considerable cost and performance flexibility, e.g. modifications such as the substitution of higher performance fibers, altering the spacing array and/or fiber tow size, addition of densification process cycles, etc. will enable the manufacture of higher grade multidimensional C/C. Carbon fiber preform fabrication and densification currently account for 50% and 25% respectively of the cost of multidimensional C/C so they will be the major focus of cost reduction efforts. Recent programs at FMI have resulted in substantial incremental reduction in the costs of these processes. The proposed program will depart from traditional processing techniques in addition to building on the results of these programs. Phase I efforts will demonstrate the considerable cost benefits of these novel processes and confirm the C/C produced meets the mechanical and thermal properties required by the solicitation. In Phase II the novel processes will be automated and low cost and high performance composites will be fully characterized.
