Abstract

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LIQUID HELIUM TEMPERATURE CRYOCOOLER ISPLANNED. A REGENERATIVE CRYOCOOLER WILL PROVIDE A 20 K TEMPERATURE SINK OF A JOULE-THOMSON (J-T) STAGE USING HELIUM. AN INNOVATIVE DESIGN FOR THE J-T STAGE HEAT EXCHANGERS WILL ALLOW THE USE OF SIMPLE, HERMETIC COMPRESSORS, WHICH WILL MAKE A PORTABLE, LONG LIFETIME UNIT POSSIBLE. THE STUDY WILL FOCUS ON SYSTEMS HAVING A COOLING POWER OF LESS THAN 10 MW AT 4.2 K. THIS REFRIGERATION LOAD WOULD BE APPROXIMATE FOR SUPERCONDUCTING SENSORS, SUCH AS THE SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM INTERFERENCE DEVICE (SQUID).
