Abstract

Aerius Photonics has partnered with MEMS-based optical switch manufacturer Calient Networks to design and deliver a new generation of high-density MEMS-based all-optical router for use in space applications. This effort leverages substantial investment already made by Calient in the development of commercial MEMS-based routers as well as their recent advancements in very power efficient high-density 64x64 port MEMS-based optical routers for aerospace applications. The proposed effort delivers a large port count, very compact and lightweight system solution with a non-blocking 3-D optical switch architecture. The technology offers exceptional long-term reliability and shock and vibration tolerance. In this Phase I, Aerius Photonics will work with Calient Networks to demonstrate the technical feasibility of extending the capabilities of their switch technology toward the objective of achieving a space qualified high-density optical switch module.
