Abstract:
During Phase I, Advanced Turbomachinery Solutions designed andtested a proof-of-concept, reverse rotation capable brush seal. All project objectives were met successfully. The new, hybridseal design can be retrofit into existing gas turbine designs, within the present geometric envelope, utilizing the same orimproved materials. The new seal design has improved leakage andwear characteristics over existing brush sealsIn order to achieve this goal During Phase II it will benecessary to perform the following objectives: Prove throughaccepted design and analysis techniques that the Hybrid AdvancedReverse-Rotation Dependable (HARD) Seal will improve turbineengine performance, Develop inexpensive, reliable manufacturingtechniques for providing consistent quality seals,Perform athorough engine integration effort of the seal into the existingengine, Provide a Failure Mode Effects Analysis in an effort toquantify the associated risk of installing this new hybrid sealinto the existing engine program,Complete the maturation of ananalysis code that Navy personnel can utilize to aid in thedesign and incorporation of future Hybrid seals in prospectiveengine programs, Verify the final design through an extensivecomponent development program, and Test the innovative hybridseal utilizing engine environmental conditions.
