Abstract

IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED IN BENCH SCALE AND PILOT SCALE COAL LIQUEFACTION EXPERIMENTS THAT A PRETREATMENT AT MODERATE TEMPERATURES PRIOR TO LIQUEFACTION CAN SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVELIQUEFACTION YIELDS AND QUALITY. HOWEVER, THERE IS LITTLE BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROCESSES THAT GIVE RISE TO THE OBSERVED PHENOMENA. THIS PROJECT SUGGESTS THE IDENTIFICATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE PRELIQUEFACTION CHEMISTRY THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES AND THEORETICAL MODELS THAT HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED TO UNDERSTAND AND PREDICT COAL PYROLYSIS BEHAVIOR. THE PHASE I WORK, WHICH INVOLVES A SUBCONTRACT TO PENN STATE UNIVERSITY, IS INVESTIGATING THE PRELIQUEFACTION CHEMISTRY USING COALS AND MODEL POLYMERS REACTED IN TUBING BOMBS. PHASE II WOULD FURTHER EXPLORE THE IMPORTANT REACTIONS IDENTIFIED IN PHASE I USING A BENCH SCALE, TWO-STAGE, CONTINUOUS STIRRED TANK REACTOR SYSTEM. THE PROJECT WILL COMPLEMENT ONGOING PENN STATE WORK BY ADDING SUBSTANTIAL ANALYTICAL AND THEORETICAL CAPABILITIES IN PHASE I AND A CONTINUOUS FLOW REACTOR IN PHASE II.
