Title:
Long-Wave Infrared Transmitting Single Mode Fiber
Agency:
DOE
Contract:
DE-FG02-09ER85252
Award Amount:
$99,680.00
Abstract:
The DOE needs long-wave infrared transmitting optical fiber to support remote sensing systems for the detection of nuclear proliferation activities. This project will develop a new class of advanced infrared, transparent, single mode fibers having propagation loss less than 3 dB/m in the 8-12 micron range, rugged mechanical properties, and high optical power delivery capacity. The transition temperature of the new glass will be larger than 160 degree Celsius, in order to ensure an operating temperature higher than 100 degree Celsius. Similar glasses will be developed for the core and cladding materials, in order to ensure compatibility. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee In addition to DOE applications, such a fiber would be of great interest for infrared fiber optical sensing, infrared imaging, infrared source generation and delivery, and scientific research and development
