Abstract

A high repetition rate mid infrared laser (3-5 microns) capable of providing multispectral output covering all bands used by infrared missile would make a solid state laser based IRCM system a potentially attractive replacement for black body infrared jammers. We propose a novel laser concept that can provide the desired spectral output at repetition rates exceeding the current state-of-the-art. We shall develop a solid state laser that can provide a pulse rate of 1000 Hz (1 MHz) in a compact and efficient package. The concept uses a diode pumped mode-locked Nd laser and an intracavity Optical Parametric Oscillator to generate the desired 3-5 micron output. Preliminary analysis indicates the concept can provide 6 watts output (at 4.5 microns) from 40 watts of pump power. Development of this intracavity OPO would be an enabling technology for practical CLIRCM systems.
