Abstract

This project develops a location-based method for improving access to information in thecommunity (i.e.: public places such as parks, zoos, bus station and stops, information kiosks, touristattractions, and other places of public accommodation) that is not solely in text format. This projectaddresses the need for alternative formats by designing, developing, and testing a Pocket PC-basedsoftware system that uses GPS signals to load and deliver location-based, personalized multimediainformation content to individuals with intellectual and other disabilities. Potential applications forpersons with disabilities include two primary areas: (1) families, schools, agencies, and programs thatprovide community-based training and services to individuals with intellectual and other disabilities;and (2) places of public accommodation that provide information to the public about their services orfacilities and have obligations to make such information accessible to people with disabilities.
