Abstract

Software Agents and Agent Systems are making their way from the university research labs to the mainstream industrial and government markets. We are witnessing a revolutionary change in the computing environments as legacy stove-piped systems are giving way to flexible customizable multi-agent systems. However, most of the currently available multi-agent systems do not sufficiently address the requirements and needs of information assurance (IA). Even current research does not fully address some of the hard problems posed by the requirements for availability, integrity, confidentiality, authentication, and non-repudiation. 21st Century Systems, Incorporated (21CSI) is pleased to propose to continue the research and development of tools and methodologies to allow the application of a definable set of information assurance rules to the development and run-time monitoring of software agents. 21CSI’s Information Assurance for Intelligent Agents (IA2) project encompasses: a powerful rules-based static analysis implemented as a plug-in to the Eclipse IDE; a tamper-proof deployment methodology; and the run-time monitoring of agents executing on popular agent platforms. Our primary objective is to create easy-to-use IA tools to encourage adoption by agent developers and system administrators, without sacrificing the power, flexibility, and expressiveness needed for application to a wide range of domains and IA requirements.
