Abstract

There is a need for a durable, non-toxic textile that is protective against vector-borne diseases, effective after repeating wear and laundering, and compatible with current / future military uniforms. The insect resistant textile is also expected to have no detrimental effect on the physical properties of the textile fabric. Luna, teamed with North Carolina State University (NCSU), is addressing the Armys need to develop insect resistant uniforms that will provide a physical barrier to the penetration of an insect proboscis. This proposed program with build upon our teams ongoing efforts in this area to evaluate the physical properties required for these fabrics to prevent insect bites, as well as provide the flexibility and breathability with the physical and thermal comfort for our war fighters. This development will build on existing technology and processing methods to ensure the above properties are attained as well as mechanical durability, launderability, and low cost.
