Abstract

Towed acoustic arrays are used by the US Navy to detect submarines. Knowing the shape of the array is critical for achieving optimal system performance. There is a need for Array Shape Estimators (AES) with greater accuracy, ease of use, and reduced cost. The research proposed here is targeted toward fulfilling these needs. We plan to work toward a fiber optic sensor that will measure the shape of a towed array with minimal input from telemetry sensors. During the Phase II effort, Luna plans to complete the following goals: 1. Develop the architectural software, firmware, and hardware that will be necessary to compute accurate array shape estimates at high speeds and long range. 2. Determine suitable fiber housing to constrain frequency content of bend information, allowing for more accurate, less memory-intensive array shape estimation 3. Demonstrate shape-sensing capability in a relevant onboard environment.
