Abstract

The same power-hungry electronics that give the United States’ forces an overwhelming advantage on the battlefield increasingly strain the logistical support system and put soldiers at risk by running fuel convoys to meet the resulting increased electrical demand placed by all of the command and control, intelligence, communications, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, weapons systems, computers, and other battlefield support equipment. In order to minimize fuel consumption while providing power for these and future systems, the DoD needs a tactical power distribution architecture that creates a true power grid to: facilitate, automate, and optimize load sharing between generators; simplify and standardize tactical power distribution equipment; operate seamlessly with legacy equipment; and provide a modular plug-and-play architecture. Williams-Pyro’s Intelligent Energy Control System (IECS) addresses this need with an innovative power electronics-based system using distributed controls to create a scaleable and robust, plug-and-play, tactical power distribution system.
