Abstract

Recent events in the Middle East have focused worldwide attention toward the escalating threat of chemical and biological warfare. Naval Aviators exposed to potential CBW threats need a means to rehydrate themselves in the cockpit. Numerous studies have shown that proper hydration is essential for maximum physical and mental performance. Texas Research Institute Austin, Inc. (TRI/Austin) will team with Trelleborg Viking, Inc. to produce the most CBW resistant water pouch ever devised. A two layer design will result in the best possible agent protection, durability, flexibility, and water potability. Candidate inner bladder materials and threaded penetrator materials will be tested, and the best materials will be selected for the design. The integrity of the mechanical seal between the outer CBW barrier material and the threaded penetrator will be evaluated, along with the integrity of the edge seals in the inner bladder material, using chemical agent simulants as the challenge media. Viral penetration tests and pressure tests will also be performed. The prototype pouch will be further tested against altitude change, temperature, and drop resistance. A draft specification will be prepared that will allow complete replication. A prototype CBW resistant water pouch will be delivered to the Navy.
