Abstract

This Phase I Small Business Innovation Research Project addresses the development and feasibility evaluation of WLAN DESANVAL, a suite of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Design and Validation tools for complicated military environment where there isvulnerability to security, electromagnetic interference (EMI), Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and ordnance. The tools are developed to determine, measure, and locate sources of EMI/RFI as well as determine multi-path interference (MPI); aid indetermining a method to eliminate the impact of EMI/RFI/MPI on the WLAN; generate traffic at adjustable rates (packets of adjustable size) and measure the throughput, errors, and collisions between any two points on the WLAN; and measure the nominaltransfer rates of the most commonly used Internet Protocols (IPs); such as the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) between certain critical points in the WLAN, such as uplinks tocore and distribution devices or between clients and APs. Production level products of the WLAN design and validation tools have value in both the commercial and government sectors, especially in military applications, Navy ships, commercial boats, thedefense industry, communication between downstream and upstream operations in factories and assembly lines.
