Abstract

Combining high visual realism, functionality, and ease-of use, the Combat Airspace Visualization and Planning System (CAVAPS) will be a powerful and natural tool for mission planning and rehearsal. The final deliverable of this Phase II work will be pilot-oriented visualization software application capable of: 1) Importing flight plans, threat assessment, performance profiles, and other information from the Portable Flight Planning System (PFPS); 2) Importing flight data from simulated or live missions; and 3) Displaying this information in a three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the flight environment. CAVAPS will offer various observer perspectives of the 3D battlespace, including out-the-window and God’s-eye-views. Additionally, CAVAPS will emulate those aspects of a pilot’s visual environment linked to various aircraft systems (sensing, targeting, etc.) and the visual and mission impact that these systems create during degraded operation. Capitalizing on its unique capabilities as a low-cost, high-fidelity visual trainer, CAVAPS will also strengthen pilot confidence and visual skills through perception-based coaching techniques. The Phase II product will be fully-functional CAVAPS prototype software
