Abstract

The Managed FPGA is a system component that contains a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), System-on-a-Chip (SoC), and security features, packaged within a Multichip Module (MCM), that make this enhanced FPGA a sustainable, upgradeable component for use in DoD applications. Innovations include the use of a SoC to manage FPGA configurable logic block (CLB) defragmentation and perform security functions. The CLB defragmentation algorithm is implemented in a standard high level language (i.e., C/C++) on the SoC, easing the upgrade and maintenance cycle as new technologies become available. Security features include basic key management, programmable decryption algorithms for bit stream security, and future Anti-Tamper management. Leveraging our team's experience as one of the Nation's leading aerospace innovators and developers (FireFiberT transceivers, IEEE 1393 FireRingT network, LaserFireT laser-com link and IntelNodeT gateway), Space Photonics, Inc. (SPI) is in a unique position to successfully develop the Managed FPGA system component. Previous development efforts will also be leveraged including SPI's experience with MCM development and production for NASA, NRO and AFRL.
