Superconducting magnets are required for the development of fusion energy. In order to achieve safe, reliable, economic, and environmentally-benign operation of fusion energy systems, significant advancements in superconductor materials will be required, particularly with respect to the cost of superconducting wire. Metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) can be the most economical route to producing continuous lengths of YBCO coated conductors for superconducting magnets. Therefore, this project will design an ultra-fast, ultra-efficient tool for low-cost MOCVD production of 2nd generation YBCO coated conductors. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee In addition to the application to fusion machines, the availability of low-cost, high performance superconducting tapes should benefit a wide range of scientific, military, and commercial applications. These include long distance power transmission with reduced losses; superconducting magnetic energy storage systems with reduced size, weight, and cooling requirements; compact high-field magnets for scientific and medical applications; and light-weight power transmission and power conversion devices
