Abstract

THE PROPOSED PHASE I PROGRAM IS A FEASIBILITY STUDY MERCIAL SHIPS. SENSOR SYSTEMS TO BE ASSESSED WILL BE BASED ON THE INNOVATIVE METHOD OF S&S ASSOCIATES. IN THIS METHOD, TORQUESTRANSMITTED OVER A ROTATING SHAFT IN THE POWER SYSTEM ARE DETERMINED DIRECTLY FROM FIRST PRINCIPLES IN TERMS OF QUANTITIES MEASURED DURING THE SYSTEM'S NORMAL OPERATION. THE ENGINE PUTPUT TORQUE, LOAD TORQUE, ADN CHANGES IN EITHERARE DETERMINED SEPARATELY AND ACCURATELY. UNLIKE CURRENT METHODS OF DEDUCING ENGINE OUTPUT, WHICH ARE BASED ON EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE QUITE INACCURATE OVER A LARGE SEGMENT OF OPERATING CONDITIONS, THE PROPOSED METHOD MEASURES TORQUE NON-INTRUSIVELY UNDER ALL OPERATING C 3559 CONDITIONS, THE PROPOSED METHOD MEASURES TORQUE NON- INTRUSIVELY UNDER ALL OPERATING CONDITIONS AND IRRESPECTIVE OF THE STATE OF WEAR OF THE ENGINE. IT THERBY MAKES POSSIBLE MONITORING AND CONTROL SYSTEMS THAT ARE LINKED DIRECTLY TO CONTINUOUS, ACCURATE, AND SEPARATE MEASUREMENT OF (A) POWER OUTPUT BY ENGINE, AND (B) POWER TAKEN UP BY THELOAD. THE BEST SYSTEM CONFIGURATION AND COMPONENTS WILL BE DETERMINED. NO SENSOR SYSTEM OF THE TYPE PROPOSED IS KNOWN CURRENTLY TO EXIST OR TO BE IN DEVELOPMENT ELSEWHERE.
