Abstract
THE ACCURATE AND CONVENIENT MEASUREMENT OF STRAIN IN ADVERSEENVIRONMENTS (HIGH TEMPERATURE, HIGH RADIATION LEVEL, VACUUM ENVIRONMENTS) POSES SPECIAL PROBLEMS. THE PROPOSED OPTICAL STRAIN MEASURING DEVICE IS CAPABLE OF MAKING STRAIN MEASUREMENTS UNDER THESE CONDITIONS AS WELL AS PROVIDING PROGNOSTIC INDICATORS OF IMPENDING RUPTURE AND STRUCTURAL FAILURE. THE DEVICE SHOULD BE USEFUL FOR MONITORING STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS IN NUCLEAR REACTORS, AND TESTING FOR PLASTICALLY-STRAINED AIRCRAFT COMPONENTS (TURBINES, WINGS, ETC.)
