Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are used in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). In order to increase automobile market share, NiMH costs need to decrease by providing a higher energy density and longer lifetimes. This project will develop a non-fracturing, low-cost, TiMn2 metal hydride negative electrode material. The proposed protective coating on the TiMn2 electrode particles will enable cell performance with 2000 W/kg high rate capability, 0.02%/ cycle capacity fade, and 500 mAh/g negative electrode reversible capacities. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The low cost electrode should enable the use of metal hydride batteries for stationary energy storage. In addition, this drop-in negative electrode technology should find use in the improvement of commercial NiMH power cells used in various applications, including hybrid electric vehicles, power tools, and electronic devices.
