Abstract

Physical Sciences Inc (PSI) proposes to develop non-toxic obscurants based on the use of particle size engineering to optimize their extinction cross sections in the infrared region and the possible incorporation of wavelength selective absorbers into non-toxic FDA-approved host materials. The obscurant materials will be able to block all wavelengths from the visible to the thermal infrared (0.4 to 12 µm). With its partner, General Dynamics Ordinance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS), we propose to implement the obscurant in a novel disseminator specifically engineered for the dispersal of pre-formed particulate obscurants. This dispersal system will have the capability to obscure personnel in rooms, courtyards and other enclosed areas, as well as small unit vehicles.
