Abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop a standoff DIAL sensor for high explosive detection that utilizes newly developed THz-frequency Quantum Cascade Laser technology. This sensor will be optimized for sensing explosives behind concealingmaterials. Potential applications include standoff detection of suicide bombers and screening of incoming material at military bases. The further understanding of the THz spectral properties of explosive mixtures and common container and concealingmaterials will be an important aspect of the proposed work. In addition to the transmission characteristics of these materials, volume diffusive scattering and the surface bidirectional distribution reflectance function (BRDF) will be studied. This workwill provide the necessary data for the development of detailed spectral models of back-scattered THz radiation from concealed objects.
