Development of a Compact, Underwater Acoustic Intensity Probe (7126-550)
Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop an engineering prototype of an underwater acoustic intensity probe which is described in US Patent #5,392,258. The proposed effort is to bring the probe from a pre-prototype unit as described in the patent, through prototype development and testing. The expected output of the program will be an engineering prototype of the probe, along with detailed manufacturing and performance specifications. This which will serve as starting basis for a commercial version of the acoustic intensity probe to be developed in a Phase II program. In the proposed Phase I program we will develop an engineering prototype, replicating the probe and its performance as described in the patent. However, the fabrication process and materials involved will be defined and documented to a sufficient level of detail to ensure manufacturability and reliability. Furthermore, design variations which can significantly enhance the performance will also be evaluated and, if warranted, included in the probe. Next, a calibration process using a slow-wave calibrator and associated drive and sensing electronics will be developed to quantify the performance. Finally, detailed technical drawings and specifications, along with a Phase II program plan for a version of the probe will be prepared and delivered.
