Abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop the next generation of ultra-sensitive, optically pumped alkali vapor magnetometers. PSI proposes to utilize a tunable diode laser with fiber optic delivery system and a gas absorption cell to develop a rugged, lightweight, and compact ultra-sensitive magnetometer. In Phase I we propose to design, construct, and test the feasibility of a prototype magnetometer. The device will be based upon ground state optical pumping of alkali atoms. We will use a pumping strategy that will minimize RF line widths to maximize the sensitivity of the instrument to measure magnetic fields. The magnetometer will be useful for geological survey, surveillance, and communication requirements. Sensitive magnetometers are valuable tools for detecting underground deposits of natural resources, volcanic activity or motion of underground lava flows, hidden underground production facilities, anomalous power line behavior, and for antennas in specific low frequency communications bands. In Phase I, PSI will demonstrate the optical pumping techniques, light detection techniques, RF tuning techniques, optimize the bench top instrument sensitivity, then demonstrate the vibration insensitivity of the bench top instrument. In Phase II, PSI will design, engineer, construct, and field test a fast response flight capable diode laser optically pumped magnetometer (OPM).
