THE SINGLE FIBER CRYSTAL SCIENCE BY THE FLOAT ZONE METHOD OFFERS OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ENRICHMENT OF ADVANCED MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY BY PRODUCING FIBERS AND MATRICES FOR METAL MATRIX AND INTERMETALIC MATRIX COMPOSITE MATERIALS FOR USE IN AEROSPACE STRUCTURES. THE FOLLOWING PROPOSAL ADDRESSES THE NEED FOR IMPROVED PROCESSING METHODS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FIBERS HAVING LOW DENSITY, HIGH ELEVATED TEMPERATURE STRENGTH, HIGH ELASTIC MODULUS WITH THERMAL COEFFICIENTS MATCHING METALLIC AND INTERMETALIC MATRICES AND WITH CHEMICAL COMPATIBILITY TO THE SAME. PENN LABORATORIES HAS AN INVESTMENT INTO THE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE LASER FLOAT ZONE TECHNIQUE, WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN THE TECHNIQUE COUPLED WITH OUR EXPERIENCE WITH LASERS AND CONTROLLED PROCESSES WE OFFER THIS PROPOSAL TO RESEARCH AND DEVELOP NEW INNOVATIONS FOR THE CRYSTAL FIBER PRODUCTION SCIENCE.
