Abstract

Creare’s ultimate objective is to provide the Navy with an improved method for determining the elongation of aircraft carrier catapult cylinder rows. During Phase I, we developed benchtop prototypes and conducted extensive laboratory tests in representative environments and considered integration options in detail. Based on these prototypes, we established an overall system topology, shipboard integration approach, and usage plan that will meet the Navy’s ultimate needs. During Phase II, we will use an iterative design/build/test/refine process to field test the concept, beginning with extensive testing in the laboratory and at the land-based catapult facility at Lakehurst NAES. We will then conduct shipboard testing to evaluate performance, robustness, and integration issues. At the conclusion of these initial tests, we will compare elongation data from the automated sensor datawith ship records to assess accuracy and reliability. Concurrently with the initial sensor testing, we will work with the Navy to develop the overall system topology and integration plan in sufficient detail so that in the latter half of Phase II, we can demonstrate the complete system including sensors, displays, and physical integration.
