Abstract

We are proposing to develop a novel compact blue fiber laser which overcomes the limitations of currently available lasers. These lasers offer significant advantages over the solid-state and gas lasers that are presently available. Fiber lasers are compact, efficient, widely tunable, and deliver their power in a small core (<5m) fiber which is easy to use and is incredibly versatile. The major innovative aspect of our proposal is in the novel pumping scheme that eventually will yield a very compact and practical device for field use. Conservative estimated powers are greater than 25 mW. This amount of power is sufficient for many applications. Read/Write optical storage (1-10 mW), optical displays (1-1000 mW), and medical surgery/diagnoses (1-30 mW) are just some of the areas where blue fiber lasers can capture a sizable market share. Even in the Phase I feasibility stage, we are designing the blue laser with the ultimate cost and efficiencies in mind in order to facilitate moving this product from paper to a marketable device.
