Abstract

THERE IS INCREASING INTEREST WITHIN THE HIGH ENERGY PHYSICS COMMUNITY IN INVESTIGATING ELECTRON INTERACTION PHENOMENA ATENERGIES NEAR 1 TEV. A LINEAR COLLIDER, HAVING A DESIGN BASED ON THE RELATIVISTIC KLYSTRON TWO-BEAM ACCELERATOR (RK/TBA) DESCRIBED BY SESSLER AND YU, OFFERS A PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE APPROACH TO ACHIEVING SUCH ENERGIES. IN THIS APPROACH, HIGH ENERGY, LOW CURRENT ELECTRON BEAMS ARE ACCELERATED USING THE MICROWAVE FIELDS GENERATED BY CO-MOVING ELECTRON BEAMS IN THE RELATIVISTIC KLYSTRON CONFIGURATION. HIGH ACCELERATING GRADIENTS OF 200 MV/M ARE ESSENTIAL IN ORDER TO DESIGN A REASONABLY-SIZEDMACHINE THAT IS ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE. HOWEVER, THIS IMPLIES PEAK RF DRIVE POWERS OF 1 GW PER METER OF HIGH ENERGY ACCELERATOR LENGTH. THERE ARE MANY ISSUES TO BE RESOLVED IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF THE RK/TBA APPROACH. CRITICAL ISSUES THAT WILL BE ADDRESSED IN THIS PROJECT INCLUDE REACCELERATION OF THE LOW-ENERGY RK BEAM AFTER MICROWAVE EXTRACTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF LOW COST LINEAR INDUCTION ACCELERATOR/RELATIVISTIC KLYSTRON DESIGNS. IN THE PHASE I WORK IT IS PLANNED TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE LOW COST 1.5 MEV, 2 KA ACCELERATOR DEVELOPED BY PULSE SCIENCES, INC. HAS SUFFICIENTLY GOOD BEAM EMITTANCE FOR USE IN A RK/TBA; TO STUDY TECHNIQUES FOR FURTHER REDUCING THE COST OF A RK/TBA; AND TO DESIGN A SIGNIFICANT PHASE II EXPERIMENT THATWILL DEMONSTRATE CRITICAL RELATIVISTIC KLYSTRON REACCELERATION ISSUES. VALUABLE INTERACTIONS WITH THE HIGH ENERGY PHYSICS COMMUNITY AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE ACCELERATOR COMMUNITY ARE ALSO PLANNED.
