Abstract

Space-based laser systems require unsurpassed reliability and ruggedness, as space-deployment may make it impossible to service and repair deployed systems. In this program we propose to continue our Phase I investigation to systematically identify, address and eliminate the most significant failure points in space-deployed diode laser systems. We will replace these points of failure with evolutionary and revolutionary assembly methods and capabilities that will significantly increase the probability of success for space-based missions. We will address each of the significant failure modes present in today’s diode based laser systems. At the conclusion of this program we will have developed design and manufacturing techniques more robust than found anywhere else in the industry. The design and testing of these new packaging capabilities will be directed towards improving the TRL and the probability of success for space deployed diode laser-based systems.
