Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to derive a practical, manufacturable route to a high performance two-dimensional photonic crystal broad area high power diode laser, through collaboration between a leading research institution (Caltech) and a leading manufacturer of high power diode lasers (nLight). Initial work would be performed on InP based high power broad area devices, but would be transferable to other wavelengths once proven. Design studies for a high performance 2-D photonic crystal laser will be performed. Initial assessment of prototype lasers will be performed using early Caltech designs on nLight epitaxial growth. The process and tool capability required to deliver high performance photonic crystal lasers in high volumes will be determined, in preparation for phase II. The phase I option would assess initial yield and performance by bonding, testing and assessing multiple 1-cm bars.
