Abstract

The purpose of this effort is to transition NanoSonic’s Phase II optimized blast and flame protective coatings to continuous pilot scale manufacturing and large scale plural component spray deposition processes. Additionally, NanoSonic will provide nanocomposite coated shipboard panels to Northrop Grumman as part of a Shipbuilder Special Study program to qualify the environmental and operational durability of coated hull, bulkhead and deck structures. The shipboard demonstration with Northrop Grumman will be planned for the 4Q2011. CPP funding will be used to 1) produce the infrastructure necessary for pilot manufacturing of optimized nanocomposite resins, 2) establishing processing metrics for rapid spray deposition onto hull, bulkhead and deck structures and 3) reduce material cost (< $10 / lb) through automated production processes with significantly reduced manpower hours.
