Abstract

Solar concentrator systems will require solar cells with improved efficiency and reduced cost in order to be competitive. New approaches are needed to build solar cells for optimum performance in high concentration applications. This project will demonstrate multifunction solar cells with backside contacts, which can significantly improve cell efficiencies when used in high-concentration applications. The backside contact device structure will be enabled by utilizing previously-developed epitaxial liftoff (ELO) technology. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Solar concentrator systems have recently benefited from improved performance by migrating from Si-based solar cells to multifunction cells. The successful implementation of multifunction cells with backside contacts should enable further improvements in system performance and cost competitiveness.
