Abstract

We propose to develop a rapid prototyping/manufacturing technology for the direct-write fabrication of optical components, including GRIN (Gradient index of Refraction) lenses up to 6 inches in diameter. We will build a GRIN Lens Printing Platform whichwill utilize a 3D ink-jet printing approach with multiple print heads having fluids of differing refractive index, and we will use this machine to form GRIN lenses directly from CAD file inputs derived from optical models. We will develop sets of opticalmaterial formulations for printing, beginning with ultraviolet-curing optical epoxies and evolving toward low-melting-point infrared glasses. The commercializable
