Abstract

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING AN INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR SPACE POWER APPLICATIONS. AN INTELLIGENT PROTECTION SYSTEM WOULD OFFER SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL PROTECTIVE DEVICES AND WOULD PROVIDE RELIABILITY FOR THE POWER SYSTEM. AN AUTOMATED PROTECTION SYSTEM WILL MONITOR THE HEALTH OF THE DISTRIBUTION CIRCUITS, CLEAR CIRCUIT SEGMENTS WHICH ARE NOT HEALTHY, AND RECONFIGURE THE SYSTEM TO PROVIDE CONTINUITY OF SERVICE TO CRITICAL LOADS. THE SYSTEM WOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF KNOWLEDGE-BASE AND LEARNING SYSTEM APPROACHES TO MAXIMIZE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SYSTEM AT ALL TIMES. PHASE I RESEARCH OBJECTIVES WILL BE TO IDENTIFY AND EVALUATETHE FUNCTIONS TO BE PERFORMED BY THE AUTOMATED PROTECTION SYSTEM. VARIOUS APPROACHES INVOLVING FAULT IDENTIFICATION, PROTECTION, MONITORING, CONTROL AND CONFIGURATION RECOVERY ACTIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED FOR FEASIBILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF APPLYING TO THE SPACEBORNE SYSTEM.
