Mainstream Engineering Corporation successfully demonstrated a compact, lightweight, hand-powered miniature seawater desalinator that meets or exceeds all of the Air Force’s current requirements and is significantly smaller and lighter than the existing MROD-06 unit. Mainstream’s Survival Water Desalination Device (SWDD) with is 68% lighter and 76% smaller (overall length of 12 inches and an overall weight of 13.5 ounces.) The unit combines a highly reliable patent-pending mechanical design with cutting-edge reverse-osmosis membrane materials and integrated patented disinfection capacity to create an efficient, dependable solution to the Air Force’s needs. The SWDD resists bio-fouling of the membrane before and after use and requires no electrical power source, extending its shelf-life indefinitely. Phase I has successfully demonstrated a prototype unit which will be modified as needed based on the results of Phase II testing. Phase II will focus on extensive field-testing with Air Force aircrews and life-tests to verify the proposed design will meet the DoD’s requirements.
