Abstract

With the increasing number of biological agents that are likely to be used in terrorists¿ attacks, there is a significant need for an easy-to-use and practical biothreat detection system for homeland security. Lynntech`s fully automated BioAdvise biothreat evaluation module utilizes well-established sample preparation technology and an innovative, rapid, and multiplexed real-time PCR technology in close-loop disposable cartridges to analyze swabs, powders, etc. for biological threats with minimal operator effort. The module is an ideal device for first-responders and the DHS encountering possible biothreats. The disposable cartridges utilize cost-effective microfluidic management components to provide a closed-loop sample analysis without using any external pumps. The entire system can be powered and controlled from the USB interfaces of a laptop computer. During Phase I, Lynntech will demonstrate the microfluidic sample preparation and real-time PCR using Bacillus cereus spores, an anthrax surrogate. Lynntech will also demonstrate the real-time PCR ability to distinguish extracted DNA of Bacillus anthracis, obtained from BEI resources, from non-infective control Bacillus cereus. In Phase II, Lynntech will optimize and prepare a fully functional prototype of the BioAdvise system for evaluation by the DHS. The development of such prototype will help facilitate successful technology transfer to a Phase III commercialization stage.
