Abstract

SENTINEL is an system for automatically classifying and downgrading information for a cross-domain capability across the range of classifications. SENTINEL semantically analyzes, filters, and extracts data and information at higher classification levels in order to match user’s requirements and needs for data/information at lower classification levels. In one application, SENTINEL could be installed on an all-source network or stand-alone data repository to semantically manage and nominate information for release at lower levels based upon simple requests for information. Although SENTINEL is designed to support and promote information availability without compromising security, the core technology could also be readily adapted for semantically driven searches for intelligence analysts interested in locating their information by concept instead of by simple text-matching techniques or statistical approaches. Even data that is currently well-organized and “pre-positioned”, is confronted with the possibility that critical information never rises to the attention of analysts because it is obfuscated by traditional labeling or keyword search deficiencies. The core technologies behind SENTINEL can be further extended when a migration to other languages might be considered for help for rapid translation of concepts in a stream or body of text. Commercial applications exist in Intellectual Property management and redaction in legal proceedings.
