THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A GENERAL PURPOSE, MODULAR, HOLOGRAPHIC FRINGE ANALYSIS SYSTEM WHICH WILL BE ABLE TO USE EXPERT KNOWLEDGE TO CONTROL THE PROCESSING OF FRINGE PATTERNS INTO USEFUL ENGINEERING DATA. THE PHASE I OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FOR THIS SYSTEM. SYSTEM MODULARITY AND A WELL DEFINED ARCHITECTURE WILL ALLOW FUNCTIONS TO BE ADDED WITHOUT AFFECTING OTHER SYSTEM COMPONENTS. FRINGE ANALYSIS WILL BE CONTROLLED BY AN ANALYSIS SHELL WHICH DIRECTS THE PROCESSING FLOW THROUGH THE VARIOUS STAGES BASED ON APPLICATION-SPECIFIC CONTROL SCRIPTS. TO ALLOW ADAPTIVE CONTROL OF FRINGE PROCESSING BY EITHER THE ANALYSIS SCRIPT OR "EXPERT" DECISION MAKING SUBSYSTEMS, THE ARCHITECTURE WILL PERMIT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE ANALYSIS TO BE SHARED BETWEEN THE ANALYSIS SHELL, PROCESSING MODULES, AND DECISION SUBSYSTEMS.
