Abstract

This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project is concerned with the development of an integrated laser system which can deliver both intense high energy laser pulses and low energy high peak power pulses from the same device. The purpose of such a device would be the use of high energy pulses for the ignition of a pyrotechnic or propellant from a remote location through a fiberoptic. The low energy, high peak power pulses would be used as a system diagnostic, determining the integrity of the fiberoptic delivery system. The replacement of wires with glass optical fiber is desirable as glass is invulnerable to electromagnetic fields.
