Abstract

Television and Internet products, has partnered with the National Institutes of Health and SCETV (South Carolina PBS affiliate) to research and develop a television series and interactive Web-based program on nutrition education and media literacy for national broadcast, and for use in U.S. schools to support Local Wellness Policy Requirements. Through the development of these products, KidsCOOk will address the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and the connected risks of chronic disease in adulthood. Phase I R&D includes: 1) research and testing to determine the most effective strategies for teaching children about nutrition, health, obesity, cooking and media literacy in a socially supportive environment; 2) research and development of the best technologies to engage digital-age children, including technologies that will permit video file-sharing, pod casting and interactive gaming on nutrition and social themes. Phase II will involve 13-episode series design, production and broadcast, as well as, implementation of an outreach plan with a focus on on-line use, schools and communities. In addition to experienced producers from Sesame Street, the KidsCOOK creative team includes DreamWorks animators, top children's comedy writers and Emmy award-winning television producers. KidsCOOK envisions that an engaging national TV and interactive Web-based program, designed specifically for children 7-10, can have a tremendous positive impact on the social development, nutrition and health of children and families across the U.S. KidsCOOK Productions, LLC, a SBC with expertise in the area of educational TV.
