Abstract

THIS PROPOSAL IS TO APPLY A NEW TECHNOLOGY NOT KNOWN TO BE PRESENTLY EXPLOITED TO THE DETECTION A SPECIAL CLASS OF CONCEALED WEAPONS-THOSE MADE OF PLASTIC. IN THIS CLASS ARE GUNS(AND THEIR AMMUNITION AND KNIVES MADE OF SOME OF THE NEW INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS. ALSO OF GREAT INTEREST ARE PLASTIC EXPLOSIVES, WHICH CAN BE TEMPORARILY OR PERMANENTLY SHARPED IN A VARIETY OF FORMS FOR CONCEALMENT. BECAUSE OF CHEMICAL INERTNESS AND LIMITED USE, GUNS CAN BE IN NON-TRADITIONAL SHAPES AND, LIKE THE PLASTIC EXPLOSIVE, HIDDEN IN BODY CAVITIES. CONSIDERATION OF THE CHEMICAL NATURE OF THE SUB STANCES AND THE UNIQUE PHYSICAL MEANS AVAILABLE FOR A NON- INVASIVE, NON-HARMFUL, INSPECTION OF INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR BAGGAGE HAS NARROWED THE POSSIBLE CHOICES TO NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY (NMR).
