Abstract

The overall Phase II objective is to demonstrate functionality and performance of a 3-kW Stirling engine integrated with Thermal Energy Storage (TES) that is fueled by JP-10. The laboratory configuration energy module will be representative of such a system for application to unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) needs at the 21-inch diameter level. Because of the modular nature of the Stirling energy system, positive results in Phase II will also provide a high-confidence measure of baseline performance that is directly relevant to larger vehicles and for power levels of up to 40 kW. Phase II is broken up into a base period which is focused on detailed design and procurement of long lead items for the laboratory prototype as well as an update of the Phase I UUV energy system conceptual design; Option A is focused on hardware fabrication and test plan development; and Option B is focused on the testing of the laboratory prototype energy system and updated refinement of the UUV energy system conceptual design.
