Abstract

GSE has developed a novel concept for a hybrid track system that greatly improves performance. Preliminary lab tests have demonstrated significant reduction of track-induced noise and vibration, which will lead to improved ride quality for troops and crew, improved reliability of on-board equipment, and reduced maintenance costs. In addition, the new hybrid track concept eliminates traditional track backing pads, and incorporates a replaceable track backing surface. This innovative feature allows the ground pads and backing surface to be refurbished multiple times through the life of the vehicle, thus greatly increasing the durability life of the track. This ability to refurbish the track will allow significant O&S cost savings over the life of the vehicle, as opposed to the current situation where premature wear of certain components requires that the entire track is scrapped. Besides the direct cost savings from a longer life track, an improved track system will afford additional intangible cost savings. Reduced noise and vibration levels will lead to improved equipment reliability, reduced vehicle maintenance, reduced logistics, and reduced maintenance manpower burden.
