Abstract
The main objective of this proposal is to develop ultra low drive voltage, low insertion loss, and high bandwidth modulators. This will be achieved using substrate removed optical nanowires. This new phase modulator design and fabrication platform will be combined with existing techniques for achieving the required high bandwidth and high efficiency operation, such as traveling wave electrode design and push-pull Mach Zehnder modulator architecture. The proposed approach enables a modulator that has a drive voltage on the order of 0.1V and the potential for integration of a driver amplifier.
