Abstract

THE PROPOSED WORK WILL EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY OF USING PROCESSING SCIENCE TO TAILOR THE COMPOSITION AND INTERFACE BONDING OF WHISKER-REINFORCED CERAMIC COMPOSITES. MICROSTRUCTURAL CONTROL WILL BE EVALUATED BY VARYING GEL STRUCTURES (COLLOIDAL VERSUS POLYMERIC) AND SINTERING (LIQUID STATE VERSUS SOLID STATE) CONDITIONS. THE MULLITE-MULLITE AND MULLITE-ALUMINA COMPOSITES WERE SELECTED FOR THE STUDY OF MATRIX-FIBER INTERFACES BECAUSE THEY PROVIDE THE OPTIMUM CHARACTERISTICS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A MODEL SYSTEM. WORK IS PLANNED TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF MICROSTRUCTURE AND INTERFACE REACTIONS ON THE FRACTURE TOUGHNESS AND STRENGTH.
